What is hair porosity?

Porosity refers to your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. It influences how products interact with your hair, how hydration is held, and what oils will work best to nourish and protect it.

This is the foundation of how we formulate, and the first step in building a haircare routine that’s truly tailored to you.

How to discover your porosity

Your porosity isn’t defined by hair type or texture, it’s defined by behaviour. How your hair responds to water, product, and the environment offers the best clues about what it needs most. These simple at home tests can help you better understand how your hair absorbs and holds moisture.

The Water Spray Test

Watch how your hair responds to water and absorbs moisture in real time.

Gently sits on the surface → Low Porosity

Absorbs slowly → Medium Porosity

Soaks in quickly → High Porosity

The Drying Time Test

After washing, observe how long it takes your hair to air dry; this reveals how long moisture is retained.

Slow drying, may take 2 hours or more to fully dry → Low Porosity

Dries within 1-2 hours → Medium Porosity

Quick drying, may dry in under 1 hour → High Porosity

The Product Absorption Test

Notice how your hair responds to oils or creams, does it drink them in, or let them sit.

Product sits on top → Low Porosity

Steady absorption → Medium Porosity

Quick absorption but still dry → High Porosity
